<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeExo7LGsyKBEVkYy6Nm7P7DBraFjwEx3AWG8-8NLWi2nFHN_RvToU8d8E7Wk_SJstaBuQo53n5p81FbO-bDggoksY1Z1rd250he5txr713nc4Nq1_9z_E7yUj6eBmXFq7wqJETzoCupo/s1600/_MG_1319-web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeExo7LGsyKBEVkYy6Nm7P7DBraFjwEx3AWG8-8NLWi2nFHN_RvToU8d8E7Wk_SJstaBuQo53n5p81FbO-bDggoksY1Z1rd250he5txr713nc4Nq1_9z_E7yUj6eBmXFq7wqJETzoCupo/s320/_MG_1319-web.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm often asked is, "where do you get your ideas?" And although I couldn't pinpoint where they come from, they often happen in a similar way. Usually I am just working through a mundane part of the process on a current piece, my brain wanders off...and pop pop pop they just start coming.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'd like to do this, I could do it like this, on this, the title could be this, or this, or this...and the whole piece just erupts. I scramble for paper, or in the case of a few minutes ago, rush back to the studio to write notes. Because they often start to vanish as quickly as they come. Ideas that have been sparked by interstate driving are pretty much lost, until they are triggered again. If they are triggered again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The piece above, didn't come quite that quickly. It made me work for it a bit. The title is "The Initiation"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The dress has a repeat pattern of mouse traps, directions are stitched on the waterfall photo. Oh, and the not so subtle ring of fire. This piece will be shown for the first time at the Des Moines Art Festival. You can see my summer show schedule <a href="http://kathrineallencoleman.com/news.html" target="_blank">here!</a></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrbRmgmIDoXWyrm81hyACXQkzOZc7TJxBjchQIr0i2o05wj_yStsNNyshZyWJehB2dtTHs4Wp3XQppBLDM57IrKb6xS1JaEFvOUdxLXyRBTxzNXO_5AArpvDHw8Kb2zpcmA5UUfTYKkh4/s1600/IMG_4985.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrbRmgmIDoXWyrm81hyACXQkzOZc7TJxBjchQIr0i2o05wj_yStsNNyshZyWJehB2dtTHs4Wp3XQppBLDM57IrKb6xS1JaEFvOUdxLXyRBTxzNXO_5AArpvDHw8Kb2zpcmA5UUfTYKkh4/s320/IMG_4985.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm not really sure how it happened.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But I am starting a collaboration in clay.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Minneapolis ceramic artist Kyle Osvog and I have been tossing ideas back and forth for months, trying to build things that showcase his forms, and incorporate my linocut prints. The learning curve has been steep, especially for me. Paint and printing inks are one thing, glazes and underglazes are a whole different beast. I have had failure after failure. Ugly glazes, uncooperative transfers, and stuff that just blew apart, fell off, or simply stuck together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But things are starting to work a little more often than not. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, I'm going to keep trying.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can see a bunch of available work in my Etsy shop, and more work will be coming down the pike soon. Take a look <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheSpringGallery?ref=search_shop_redirect" target="_blank">HERE</a> to see what's available, and consider purchasing a piece to keep the process moving forward! These won't be going on the road to any major shows soon, so if you want one, the Etsy shop is the place to go!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And have no worries, the paintings will still be coming, but I think the crossover from one medium to another will be interesting to watch. Thanks for checking in!</div>

<br />
It's that time of year where I unwillingly find myself confronting all the New Year's traps. Looking back at all the successes and failures of 2015. Trying to figure out what went wrong, and what went right. I say I don't make New Years Resolutions, but I kinda do. They are the standard ones, I'll be more organised, get more exercise, convince myself I'm going to make better work, better business decisions, read more... oh, and stop procrastinating.<br />
<br />
Of course few of these things stick, by February I am hunting for paperwork, drying paintings with a blow dryer, and my only reading seems to be articles online.<br />
<br />
Maybe this year will be different, I've tidied the studio, made to do lists, I've even made some work already. I have applied to all the shows I want to be in between now and July. Yup, applications ore often due 6-7 months before the show. <br />
<br />
Speaking of, this coming week is a big one. One of the big Accept/Reject weeks. The week that many of the sweet summer shows that I really want to be in start sending out the results from the jury process. That sweet little *ping* in my inbox either reads...Congratulations! Or, We regret to inform you... I open all these emails with one eye closed, just to soften the blow. It doesn't work worth a shit, but I do it anyway.<br />
<br />
These little *pings* are what decide where I will be driving to this summer, they also decide which of my friends are going to be there, and whether I will have a roommate, if he or she makes the cut. It feels like a total crap shoot much of the time. But if it's good, it's great. And with any luck at all I'll be able to write my calendar in ink, and update my schedule online.<br />
<br />
Fingers crossed.kathrinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17907151307568919714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3510112951986548555.post-50869410788496196812015-11-23T00:03:00.000-05:002015-11-23T00:03:55.397-05:00Hark the Herald of Small Voices<br />

I am very pleased to be a part of a new installation at Signature Shop in Atlanta from now through early January. Hark the Herald of Small Voices features work by Kirsten Stingle, Christine Kosiba, and myself. Loosely woven around the folklore of Krampus, the exhibit features naughty children, and their toys as they are watched over by ravens or crows.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the center of the show is a tree topped by Krampus, loaded with one of a kind decorations for the collector of odd and wonderful things. If you are in the Atlanta area please join us for Tea and Krampus on December 12th from 1-5pm.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Krampus will be there with his helpers posing for photos, and maybe even pouring some tea.</div>

I've been holding out on you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Work has been coming out of the studio at a nice steady pace, but I have been hoarding it. Keeping it to myself. Waiting for the right time, and all the while making more work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is one of my favorites, "Scapegoat."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Scapegoat gets blamed for everything, even things that are clearly not his fault. He gets so good at this, that eventually he begins to blame himself, he doesn't even need the middleman.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Projects, works in progress, unfinished, almost finished, turned against the wall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I rarely start one piece, and ride it to completion all in one go. There are drying times, and other factors that just get in the way. So when one piece is in limbo, I am working on another. This usually means that either it feels like I haven't finished anything in ages. Or, work is flying out of the studio and waiting for framing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Right now, it feels like I haven't finished anything in ages, especially as I was out of the studio for almost a month. So I'm focusing on the small victories.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Red Handed is in progress</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And tags, I'll be making more tags. In paper, like these, and in porcelain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Can you imagine the clinking sound that porcelain tags will make as they bump?</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Projects, collaborations, partnerships, those things are all sounding interesting too... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yes, I'm keeping busy, I'll keep you in the loop!</div>

And the answer always escapes me, I fumble it. Sometimes I actively hunt ideas, I used to buy art books and visit galleries regularly. But, I find that rarely works for me, although I love the distraction. More often than not, just staying in the studio and working on something keeps ideas flowing.<br />
<br />
But they really start popping when I am presented with new challenges. Fewer shows on the road, but more gallery show this year have stirred things up a bit. As has the opportunity for collaboration with other artists, and getting to work in new media.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't know how far these new ideas will go, if they will push a new body of work into the forefront, or just be pulled into the arena that I work in now. But I am enjoying this time of experimenting.<br />

<br />kathrinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17907151307568919714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3510112951986548555.post-15350738606028139952014-04-19T12:38:00.000-04:002014-04-19T12:38:20.533-04:00Bad Girlfriends<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been looking a for reason to start a series of bad girls. Just the idea of bad girls, what is considered "bad" vs "good" and who gets to decide amuses me a bit. Then, out of the blue, the idea of "Bad Girlfriends" takes over. Tightens the focus for the series a bit, excludes the idea of little girls, unless your idea of a bad girlfriend includes a petulant pouty grown up who is acting like a little girl. That's a definite fit, and may well be used in the future!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, what pulled the trigger to get this series on the easel? I was accepted to exhibit in Jazzfest in New Orleans. I can't think of a better place to introduce the Bad Girlfriends. Here are the first two.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii5maxuQbemPoy1jOAU4IB3Q1G7KZ1WSoFW5n3o_LZYOlsaMTL9CuLnBSx4MORJTAaUSDJ0zWJ4OgZm38eNx-Z6yhBPH905VtijbezQk45NVGE8jDqAFXNkteMbYSIhulMOFodPtff-r0/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii5maxuQbemPoy1jOAU4IB3Q1G7KZ1WSoFW5n3o_LZYOlsaMTL9CuLnBSx4MORJTAaUSDJ0zWJ4OgZm38eNx-Z6yhBPH905VtijbezQk45NVGE8jDqAFXNkteMbYSIhulMOFodPtff-r0/s1600/image.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Clingy</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A cocktail dress adorned with Octopi, the background features the same pattern on the warm tones of dress pattern tissue. Red roses are scattered across the top.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYqwsiRV8XSMU99ThmaHcJBnB-LdniTxTIFuz2PYb_Eu9ILuiHdtUh4cujkWAO4edewdzblLq0otrxGhrHnEOMCDCKRdlwP55KRaIdsecC4sqdjOfvThSNTb1koIujnAMhuOrSuwxyJ6g/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYqwsiRV8XSMU99ThmaHcJBnB-LdniTxTIFuz2PYb_Eu9ILuiHdtUh4cujkWAO4edewdzblLq0otrxGhrHnEOMCDCKRdlwP55KRaIdsecC4sqdjOfvThSNTb1koIujnAMhuOrSuwxyJ6g/s1600/image.jpg" height="320" width="235" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Documentrix</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The dress is covered in silver leaf and photo transfers. It has a shine that falls somewhere between the tin man and the lovely flicker of silver gelatin prints. If you are related to me in any way you may recognize someone on this dress. The lime green background is overwhelmed by vintage camera prints, and the spots and sparkle that comes with too many flashbulbs going off. The documentrix is she who always has the camera phone out, stealing your soul, one digital click at a time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ok, I'm back out in the studio!</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I feel like I'm neglecting y'all.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm just too busy making new work to be able to find time to blog about new work.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And I've found this work rhythm that really fits. But it all seems to be in studio, carving lino, pulling prints, putting together new ideas, painting, assembling. All that stuff. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The other stuff, the book keeping, the show scheduling, the website-etsy-blogger-twitter-newsletter stuff.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
That stuff just isn't getting done.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But the work is getting done, although I rewarded myself for a couple good shows with a full day in the garden. I've pushed a little paint, and I'm about to pull a few prints. I actually have the blocks laid out, the paper cut, and The Talking Heads on the CD player. But I thought I'd come in and say hi. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The good news is, I have a couple of great shows lined up that I'm excited about. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On April 11, 12, 13 you can find me at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival. This is the first time I've been in this show for several years, as I usually head to Texas. So I hope to see some Atlanta folks! And then, you can find me in New Orleans for Jazzfest on April 25th, 26th, and 27th.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And I have to tell you, I'm pretty Jazzed about that one.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'll write again, I promise. </div>
kathrinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17907151307568919714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3510112951986548555.post-76818725818634739922014-02-23T10:34:00.000-05:002014-02-23T10:36:33.909-05:00Leap<div style="text-align: center;">
So I've had this bathing suit piece sitting in my studio since, oh, July. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It started ok, but quickly lost momentum, and eventually got bogged down in an ugly spot. The only thing that looked good were the midnight blue rings. Raindrops, puddles from a sprinkler perhaps? So, I put it aside, face against the wall as I worked on other things. Yesterday, the time had come, I put it on the table, and started painting over the ugly bits.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You hear lots of different advice on getting out of a painting rut, but my preferred tactic is to paint my way out. I am an intuitive painter. By that I don't mean, I just "follow my heart, and let paint fly." It's more of a process of adding and subtracting, working with the limitations set by the piece, the limitations set by the last decision. And somehow, it just comes together. Buried in the red background is an octopus. and the girl doing the cannonball? After several months of not really painting anything remotely realistic, all I had to go on was, "Gee, I wonder if I can still do this."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Being a full time artist, living this life, travelling across the country in hopes of a good show. It's always a leap. Sometimes you just have to tuck your legs up and go.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh, and "Leap" finally gave my new direction a title.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_l-VwPW-0w-7r_HLVzK5zktC2LcCRdU55gh6Gt4-IeyUWbghclL6qW9bfTmYNGkllmjw6Gm53jwJdrjmo0Xi7rE5VD3M1loDxfASEj29_jlCF2zhDZG7Q0-LB8yohZiRu-3SKimzlG54/s1600/photo+%252811%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_l-VwPW-0w-7r_HLVzK5zktC2LcCRdU55gh6Gt4-IeyUWbghclL6qW9bfTmYNGkllmjw6Gm53jwJdrjmo0Xi7rE5VD3M1loDxfASEj29_jlCF2zhDZG7Q0-LB8yohZiRu-3SKimzlG54/s640/photo+%252811%2529.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Some of you may know that once-upon-a-time I was a printmaker.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I would pull small editions of linocut prints. I used the reductive process, carving a block, printing from it, and carving the same block further. I was always searching for the perfect print, and constantly rejecting a print that had a blemish, a dot of dust, a dry "sparkly" area.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But now? Oh yes, printmaking is obviously in my blood, because I am back at it. Linocuts have become a very strong part of my dress paintings, and now, my new body of abstract work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But now I get to ignore the rules. I can apply ink thickly and painterly, or dry and almost translucent. I can shift colors with no worries of an "edition". And blemishes? Bring it! Crinkles and folds, sparkle and all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yeah, I'm kinda having fun with this. And the abstracts have their very own shows coming up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
See you in Miami at Coconut Grove - Feb. 15, 16, 17</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And in Atlanta at the Dogwood Festival April 11, 12, 13</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUmDcRDVNV5bpZg4sQKZxtzfZ33wP2zzvYcXQnvg7LxF5b4oheQx5KO_9YbX-8XVfI35w4z5MToz_hBSrjvEUeeCGQd8STuXGbxC-3Yh9pdlvpzpfa83YnzdB5nDynb011rsHFczAKE_Y/s1600/commission+table.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUmDcRDVNV5bpZg4sQKZxtzfZ33wP2zzvYcXQnvg7LxF5b4oheQx5KO_9YbX-8XVfI35w4z5MToz_hBSrjvEUeeCGQd8STuXGbxC-3Yh9pdlvpzpfa83YnzdB5nDynb011rsHFczAKE_Y/s320/commission+table.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yes, I know, I've been very quiet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Truth be told, I have been working like a field hand. Well, not really, but you get the idea. I finished my last show for the year, took a couple of weeks to regroup after a lot of travel, and opened my commission drawer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My commission drawer is a new thing this year, every so often someone would send something, I'd take notes, put all the precious bits with the notes, and put it in the commission drawer. When I finally opened it, it was a bit of an archeological dig. The deeper I went, the further back in time I was for promised delivery dates. Fortunately, you are all very patient.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But, after a starting process that was like pulling the cord on an ancient lawnmower, I am moving forward. The table above shows the five pieces that will be done before Christmas, and there are still a couple in the drawer for the first of the year. Hopefully I shot this photo with enough discretion that no one will spot their gift!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Have you ever considered a commission? Feel free to contact me, and be patient!</div>

But I've been busy, and sometimes the new pieces sell before I've had a chance to put them up, and, and, and...<br />
<br />
Ok, enough excuses. Here is what I've been up to in the past few weeks, in addition to the (elle)ements. Don't know what an (elle)ement is? Check that out <span id="goog_1547104959"><a href="http://www.elleements.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">here</a>. </span><br />
<br />
Here we go, the new girls. Dresses on canvas, linoleum block prints, and acrylic paint.<br />

All of these new pieces are currently bumping up I-75 in a motorhome, headed to Sausalito, California. By way of Dayton, Ohio, and Chicago, and a few other places. Here is a link to that whole story... <a href="http://www.mybrotherinlawsidea.blogspot.com/">www.mybrotherinlawsidea.blogspot.com</a></div>

I never know just what to say when people ask me how long it takes to do a piece. Sometimes the execution goes fairly quickly, sometimes not. Or if it's like this piece, the idea lodges in my brain and stays there for months, slowly inching to the surface.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But I like her, I've always had a soft spot for black sheep. Especially the ones that leave legendary stories that families talk about for years. Linoleum block prints on tissue, acrylic paint, a vintage dress, and a lot of little silver beads stitched through the canvas are all that make this piece.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the things I like about working in this series is, how intuitive the process is. My dress pieces are largely planned, the plans may change as the situation requires, but there is a general feeling that I'm going for. I work toward that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But with these, I just start. What I just did on the canvas, influences what I'll do next. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, I pulled out these 6 identical 8" square canvases, and painted the first one with a brilliant deep cadmium red. I liked how it looked, and decided to do another, until I decided that all 6 needed to be different variations of the red.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, I started making decisions about what to collage on top. I managed to pull in the palette to just a handful of neutral colors, plus the red that was already there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's interesting how things morph and change from one thing to another. I started doing a series of tiny pieces that I called (elle)ements. These were essentially elements of the "big girl" dress pieces I was doing. (Elle) is French for the feminine, just in case you were wondering. These little 4" square canvases have been holding their own quite nicely, and they have their own blog <a href="http://www.elleements.blogspot.com/">www.elleements.blogspot.com</a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But they have started moving things in another direction. Simple abstract pieces that focus on the process of layering, the juxtaposition of patterns ancient and modern, opaque over transparent. I think they are coming along nicely. Above are my three latest pieces, all 36" square. You can see these, and the rest of my new abstract body of work this weekend at the Decatur on the Square Festival. In Decatur, GA. Hope to see you!</div>

Lucky Girl is going to Ft.Worth or Nashville for her first show. I haven't decided which, so if you have any interest, and plan on going to one show or the other, let me know, I can be swayed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lucky Girl's dress is a gorgeous corduroy, and is a royal blue. The name of the piece is embroidered in the top left and right canvases. The white circles are surrounded by a ring of glass pearls, pearl necklaces of sorts. The teacup in the middle is a tinted photo transfer. </div>

About a week ago I asked folks on Facebook what they would rather read me blog about, my art fair influences, my terrific middle school art teacher, or a sort of photo essay on one of the processes I use in my paintings. Process sort of won, but I will eventually get to the other topics. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I start taking photos of what I'm working on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Transferring a new damask pattern that Scott designed onto linoleum. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then it all goes a little off track, the lino is in the background of this shot, still being carved as I move on to some stitching.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As other pieces are finished.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8H_2X_TebKXLhNeA-47eU69-wQfZCa5HHsXQaBrbaYaFbp5G7jsnDG4ORZ11t_qz0VyIWgnLTTg-Wc9OAjKCUdNrg-1AP3v0WvPci0j09d_mVAyx8C2GPGviGXT2UBwHECeWFvg5P87U/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8H_2X_TebKXLhNeA-47eU69-wQfZCa5HHsXQaBrbaYaFbp5G7jsnDG4ORZ11t_qz0VyIWgnLTTg-Wc9OAjKCUdNrg-1AP3v0WvPci0j09d_mVAyx8C2GPGviGXT2UBwHECeWFvg5P87U/s320/image.jpg" width="295" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So there you have it, Lucky Girl, Black Sheep, Goody Two Shoes, and another yet unnamed piece are all crashing around out there, ranging from barely started to almost complete. I bounce from painting to printing to stitching to photographing, and somehow it is all getting done. All linear thought processes out the window, I visualize something closer to pushing an entire wave to shore.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now to get back out there...</div>

Introducing linoblock prints into my work has become a bit of a game changer for me. I keep finding new ways to incorporate them into the big dress pieces, but more and more I am working with them alone. I love the layers and the shifts in color. Here are a couple "fresh" ones.</div>

They aren't very big, just 12" x 16" but I hope to be doing some larger, and much larger pieces soon.</div>

<br />
<br />
Ok, here I am just laying it out here. This is the story. After umpteen dozen years of applying to the Winter Park Sidewalk Arts Festival, this year I was (finally) accepted. I am still pretty sure someone miscounted something somewhere, but I am going anyway.<br />
<br />
A few weeks ago I received an email from the show that said in addition to the wads of prize money they already have at this show, there will be one late addition. The Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation is sponsoring an "Art of Philanthropy" purchase award in celebration of their 40th anniversary. The award is $5000 and the chosen piece will be on permanent display at the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation in Winter Park.<br />
<br />
Now, to put this into perspective, I don't think I have ever made a piece in hopes of going for a singular award, ever. It is just too big of a long shot, and usually the prospectus just isn't a good fit. But this one struck a chord right away. Before I knew it I had images of some variation of Girl Scouts, or Campfire Girls, going through my head. Collecting badges for acts of generosity, in spirit and otherwise.<br />
<br />
So I started carving "badges" out of linoleum, "helping hands" and "good eggs" and such, and watching the piece come together. What started out as a "Girl Scout" somehow developed the look of a heavily sponsored race car driver. But I am good with that, sometimes philanthropy needs a little horsepower behind it.<br />
<br />
So here she is, Scott will frame her this afternoon, and she will be heading South tomorrow. What is likely to happen? Well, nothing. Here I am setting the bar sky high, telling the world that I am actually tossing my hat into the ring. But truthfully, this is a show filled with bad-assed super talented folks. I may well get a pat on the shoulder, and an "attagirl." And I will have to suck it up, and tell y'all that I didn't win. But I'm going to do it anyway. If you follow me on Facebook, you will be the first to know, and I'll try to post a picture of the winning piece, mine or not. <br />
<br />
In the meantime, this weeks collection of (elle)ements are versions of her badges. You can see them as I post them at <a href="http://www.elleements.blogspot.com/">www.elleements.blogspot.com</a> <br />
<br />
Fingers crossed.kathrinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17907151307568919714noreply@blogger.com0
